The
abundance of epiphytes in the oldest of rainforest trees means
that it is quite common for branches and even entire trees to
collapse under their weight.
This creates gaps in the canopy through which light can
penetrate all the way down to the normally gloomy forest
floor.

 The
active crater of Póas volcano has a diameter of 1.3km, making
it one of the three widest in the world.
It is not unknown for the lagoon within the crater to
register a pH value of 0, indicating extreme acidity.
During the dry season the lagoon dries, increasing
sulphur emissions and consequently acid rain precipitation.
